Energy on LAB

LELYSTAD AIRPORT BUSINESS PARK (LAB) IS BUSY DEVELOPING. NEW AND SUSTAINABLE INITIATIVES ARE BEING SET UP AND CIRCULAR ECONOMY PLAYS A LARGE AND IMPORTANT ROLE IN THIS. LAST YEAR IT BECAME CLEAR THAT THERE IS PRESSURE ON THE POWER GRID, SO A NEW SUBSTATION WILL BE BUILT TO MEET THE NEED FOR ENERGY AND POWER. THE SUBSTATION IS EXPECTED TO BE OPERATIONAL FROM 2026, BUT WHAT IS HAPPENING IN THE MEANTIME TO RELIEVE THE PRESSURE? DENNIS MEERBURG TELLS US MORE ABOUT IT.

SOLUTIONS

Dennis: “Before the substation is there and can be put into operation, it is important that we support the current companies and future companies as well as possible. For this we are looking at different phases. For the long term that is clear, that is what the substation will be there for. However, we now also have to deal with the fact that short- and medium-term solutions are needed. For example, many companies now also supply back to the grid and it would be nice if that could be used circularly to share energy and power with other companies that need it.”

SHORT TERM

“Right now we are working on several pilots and are looking at whether companies can share energy and power with each other. If a company has power ‘left over,’ can it be made available to a company that is now ‘short’ of power? We are currently taking stock of what is possible in this and whether this also offers companies what they need as an interim solution.”

MEDIUM-TERM FUTURE

“For the medium term, we are looking at the possibilities of already building the switching station on Meerkoetenweg in anticipation of the new substation in order to connect companies in this way. The switching station can then act as an Energy Hub where energy and power can be shared at the area level, and supply can be increased through storage. Finally, cables from Zeewolde can also be inserted at the switching station to meet LAB’s energy and power demand.”
