Sustainability & Innovation
Lelystad Airport Business Park has the ambition to be a testing ground for sustainable and innovative area development. With this in mind, we are working on various initiatives and developments in the areas of mobility, data and energy, some of which have already been successfully realized. In doing so, we work closely with various partners, including Liander, Eneco, ABB, GreenIT, universities and colleges. The sustainable and innovative nature of the business park contributes positively to lab’s business climate.
First business park with BREEAM-NL Area certificate
LAB is the first business park to receive BREEAM certification for area development. The BREEAM-NL Area label assesses an entire area on six sustainability categories: management, synergy, resources, spatial development, well-being & prosperity and area climate. This makes BREEAM-NL Area the yardstick for sustainable area development in the Netherlands, setting the bar higher than legal requirements.
Ground Balance
During the construction and preparation of the plan area, as much soil as possible is kept and processed in the area, thus eliminating unnecessary transport movements. Less transport means less CO2, providing optimal sustainability. Optimally sustainable, in other words.
DC network
Europe’s first public DC substation is located at LAB, and we are the first Dutch business park to build a hybrid energy network. It allows entrepreneurs at Flight District I to use AC and DC power. Energy network company Alliander installed the DC substation.
Power Parking
The innovative and sustainable ERDF (European Regional Development Fund) project ‘power parking’ aims to smartly integrate renewable energy generation, electric charging, and energy storage. LAB is collaborating with several partners to develop solar roofs for parking lots with charging stations. The first version is now running in Dronten. The first power parking will be installed in the LAB area in 2021.
Sustainable water chain
LAB is working with various partners to make the total water chain more sustainable. It includes saving on drinking water, efficiently collecting & transporting wastewater and recovering raw materials & energy.
Vacuum sewage
The vacuum sewage system installed in 2020 is part of the sustainable water chain. This innovative sewer system works with air pressure, saving many gallons of (drinking) water, energy, and resources. The goal is to close the entire cycle of all (waste) water within the LAB area and make it circular.
Circular firewater
LAB is also looking into innovations to use reclaimed water for sprinkler systems. We are researching a closed system where the water supply for firefighting can also be used for flushing reservoirs and pipes. The flushed water would then be re-processed for new firefighting water or other purposes, such as flushing water for toilets. This project will run from March 2021 to June 2022. Future-proof energy supply
LAB strives for a future-proof energy supply. Examples are new buildings no longer being connected to gas and using as many roofs as possible to generate renewable local energy. The goal is an energy-positive business park. Energy positivity is about consciously producing more energy than we use.
Biodiversity
Sustainability and innovation are given full scope at LAB. A sustainable world cannot exist without biodiversity. To this end, we create and encourage connections between partners, extending beyond the area of LAB. Biodiversity makes LAB a high-quality business park with a pleasant green environment to be and work in. A natural environment is visible and tangible evidence of our sustainable nature. For this reason, nature is given extra space between buildings.
JOINING FORCES FOR A SUSTAINABLE BUSINESS PARK
Sustainability is something we do together. To ensure a future-proof business park, all established companies are working towards a high level of sustainability. All new businesses moving into LAB will have to meet this level of sustainability. For this purpose, issue conditions for sustainability have been established. Of course, we also continuously look at business owners’ current and future needs. Thus, together we create a sustainable business park.
